Kitulgala

A well known trekking spot in the island, Kitulgala is a small town located in the west of Sri Lanka, 100 km away from Colombo on the main road to Nuwara Eliya via Hatton. Being the wettest place of the country, the area is surrounded by the wet zone rainforests with two monsoons every year. White Water Rafting is another popular tourist attraction in Kitulgala, which starts few kilometers upstream.

A variety of trekking paths start from Kitulgala heading towards the hill country of Sri Lanka. The combination of natural sceneries, climate and friendly villagers ensure a refreshing trekking experience to the tourists. Kitulgala is also known for the Academy Award winning movie, “The Bridge on the River Kwai” which was shot in the Kelani River near the town. This river is wide and shallow apart from a deep channel closer to the opposite bank making it an ideal spot for swimming.

Kelani Valley Forest is a forest reserve which was established in order to protect the watershed of the Kelani River. The reserve holds a range of bio diversity including a number of Sri Lankan endemics found in the Sinharaja Rainforest. Many birders stay in Kitulgala to view the rainforest birds like Sri Lanka Spurfowl, Serendib Scops Owl, Red faced Malkoha, Malabar Trogon and Green billed Coucal. Several waterfalls and ancient caves are also found in the Kitulgala region.
