Duruthu Perahera

Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera

This colorful festival of lights is celebrated on the first Poya (Full Moon day) of the year at the Kelaniya Temple known as the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya in Colombo, Sri-Lanka. This is considered as the second most important perahera (procession) among the Buddhist community and it commemorates the third visit of the Lord Buddha to Sri-Lanka.

The Kelaniya temple was consecrated during this time which was eight years after Buddha had gained enlightenment. Myth has it that Buddha sat on the gem-studded throne enshrined by the Dagoba at the temple and had preached to his devotees. The tradition of the procession originated in 1927 and it has evolved over the years to become the country’s most elaborate and grandest low country pageant. The Kelani Perahera is also an opportunity to revive Sri Lanka’s cultural traditions of drummers, dances, singers, caparisoned elephants and colourful parades making this event a night of all nights every year.
