Kandy

Kandy

Sri Lanka’s second largest city and the cultural capital, Kandy is 116 km away from the capital Colombo and 488 meters above the sea level. The city acts as the capital of the Sri Lankan Hill Country providing the gateway to the higher hills. Kandy differs climatically from the coastal region of the Sri Lanka with a cold weather supporting the tea plantations in and around the city.

Kandy is well known for the golden roofed Dalada Maligawa, where the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is preserved. Kandy Esala Perahera is a festival celebrated over ten days leading up to the Nikini full moon day during July or August. During the Perahera, a replica of the tooth relic is taken on an elephant’s back in a procession accompanied by dancers, drummers, other elephants and people. Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is another attraction of both local and foreign tourists; a park which holds an amazing diversity of plants and flowers.

Due to its wondrous geographical location, Kandy was involved with in the history of Sri Lanka for many years. This was the last capital of the Sinhalese kingdom before British captured the island. A number of shrines and temples could be seen in the suburbs and rare paintings and stone carvings of the old times can be found in each of them. The city is also known for the shopping it offers such as souvenirs, ceramics, gem stones, batiks and jewels.
