Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and the largest city with the highest population, Colombo is situated in the Western Province. It is a fascinating town which has a blend of eastern and western cultures where all colors of the island are drawn together. Many visitors appreciate the city’s colonial heritage and enjoy the vast range of fine shopping and dining outlets that can be located within the rush of its urban buzz.

There are a number of attractions offered for the tourists located in Colombo. The Colombo Fort, situated in the heart of the city which marks the ruling of the Portuguese in the island is one such place. Its area is now occupied by hotels, post office, restaurants and other important buildings of the nation while adjoining Pettah is the main shopping district for clothes, jewels, electrical and electronic goods and household items. Keleniya Raja Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple, located 7 miles away from the Colombo city in which Lord Buddha is said to have visited and preached 2000 years back.

Dehiwala Zoo which stands out in the whole Asia, provides a home to a large number of animals and birds. Adding to the list, Wolvendaal Church is one of the oldest Dutch origin churches in the region with an amazing interior design and construction. Colombo National Museum has a collection of antiques, manuscripts, statues, furniture and many other exquisite pieces collected over the years from around the country. This would be the ideal place to go for someone who wishes to learn about the country’s great history during a short time. A few other interesting tourist spots are the Vihara Mahadevi Park, Galle Face beach, Mount Lavinia beach etc.
