Adam’s Peak

Adam’s Peak, locally known as “Sri Pada” and “Samanala Kanda”, is a world renowned tourist attraction which is located in the southern part of the central mountain range of Sri Lanka. Adam’s Peak is famous for the footprint that is placed on its summit, which has caused different beliefs around it.

The hill is about 7360 feet higher from the sea level and there are steps that lead from the base to the summit to ease the difficult climb. Once you manage the tough part, the views that await you at the top are really & truly breathtaking. If you are able to reach the summit in time to watch the sunrise, it’ll remain with you as one of the most awesome things you ever saw. As you stand on the top, you find the central hills rising from the east and the land sloping away to the sea on the west, casting astonishingly beautiful views.

“Sri Pada” is the name given to it by the Buddhists, who believe that it is the sacred footprint of Lord Buddha who has placed it there on one of his journeys to paradise. Hindus believe it to be the footprint of their Lord Shiva. It is named as “Adam’s Peak” after the Biblical belief that this is the place where Adam first set foot on earth after being sent out of heaven. It has become the “Samanala Kanda” according to the local legend that butterflies go there to die, because scores of butterflies fly there during a certain season from all over the country.

Adam’s Peak has been a center of attraction for pilgrims; Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims for over 1000 years. The climbing season starts in December and goes on for more than 4 months and ends in the month of May, with the fall of the Vesak festival.
The tough climb of this holy mountain and its unique achievements would give you a long lasting satisfaction to take back with you.
